September 2 was more than eventful for the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office. Authorities were informed of a robbery, prompting those with the Robbery Intervention Detail to stop 21-year-old Luis Manuel Perez while he was in his car. Deputies discovered during the stop that Perez already had an outstanding military warrant, but that was when he allegedly decided to flee before he could be detained.
This prompted a pursuit that quickly became chaotic. Perez ran a stop sign and crashed into another vehicle, causing it to flip. The impact sent both vehicles into an unmarked Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office vehicle. The deputy vehicle was being driven by a deputy searching for Perez. While the person driving the civilian vehicle was taken to Ryder Trauma Center, he eventually died.
Perez was also taken to the hospital for evaluation. He was being held at Turned Guilford Knight Correctional Center when the news of this chase started coming out. Considering the U.S. Army confirmed that Perez had an active military desertion warrant dating back to February 15 from Fort Bliss, Texas, many were quick to assume that things wouldn’t be easy for him.
