Wisconsin police are investigating what they believe is an incident of domestic violence after they say a man fatally shot his longtime girlfriend of 24 years, according to a news report.

Local station WISN reported that officers with the Milwaukee Police Department arrested a 42-year-old man after allegedly killing a woman of the same age in their Milwaukee home. The man on Wednesday night allegedly shot her first and then tried to kill himself with the gun.

The man, unidentified publicly by name, was immediately transported to the hospital in critical condition to receive medical treatment.

Shelley Kosik, identified by her family, was the longtime girlfriend of the man and also the mother of his two teenage sons, as reported by the station.

“It just tears my heart apart because nobody should have to go through this kind of abuse,” Marjorie Butler, Kosik’s mother, told the news outlet.
