Rent Hike Boots Ruta’s Fresh Indian Fare From Walker’s Point

Ruta’s Fresh Indian Fare, the compact, health-minded Indian lunch spot in Walker’s Point, is packing up its storefront at the end of April. Owner Ruta Kahate says rising and “unaffordable” rent at the Freshwater Way location has made it impossible to stay put. The restaurant’s final day of service is April 30, capping nearly three years in Walker’s Point and five years of Ruta’s operating in and around Milwaukee.

Kahate broke the news in a brief social media post, then expanded on the decision with Urban Milwaukee, saying she had effectively been driven out by the rent. “I truly thought [Walker’s Point] would be my home, but the location just didn’t do it,” she said.

Small, bright menu and a loyal lunch crowd

Over its run, Ruta’s carved out a steady lunchtime following with a tight, vegetable-forward menu of bowls, soups and salads, plus its signature NaanMelt. The business also branched out into frozen curry sauces and meal kits, sold at local markets and through its own app. For now, the posted hours of Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., will hold through the end of April, according to Ruta’s. The site also highlights the restaurant’s catering work and meal-prep options.

After the door closes

Kahate told Urban Milwaukee that Ruta’s will keep feeding people through lunch catering and by popping up as a vendor at local farmers markets, where she already sells frozen curry sauces. Fans are encouraged to follow the business on social media for word on any future brick-and-mortar plans. Kahate said she hopes to lock in a new space before too long, although she did not offer a timeline.
