Second whistleblower alleges MMSD operator mismanagement at wastewater facilities

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – A second whistleblower is speaking out against the operator of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, accusing Veolia North America of mismanaging the district’s wastewater treatment facilities.

The whistleblower, identified May 13 as Greg Gryskiewicz, worked for Veolia on day-to-day operations at MMSD wastewater facilities for 15 years before leaving the company in 2024. During his time with the company, he held several positions including as a security guard, a ​special ​utility ​operator at the Milorganite fertilizer facility, and an on-site machinist. It was before starting the machinist position he told reporters he first questioned how facilities were being run, leading him to quit what he described as a “dream job” two weeks after receiving it.

“Existing equipment along with District-funded equipment is not properly maintained…this cycle of ‘run to fail and not fix’ has led to complete asset destruction,” said Gryskiewicz at an event held by community advocacy group Common Ground in front of the Pierhead Lighthouse in Milwaukee.
