MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) – A Minneapolis man with a long history of violent crimes is heading to federal prison for 20 years after a jury found him guilty of illegally having ammunition.

Esau Chucky Sago, 36, was sentenced to 240 months in federal prison and five years of supervised release after being convicted of possessing ammunition as a repeat violent offender — his ninth felony conviction.
Background on the case
U.S. District Judge Nancy E. Brasel handed down the sentence on Sept. 3, 2026. Sago was indicted on Feb. 26, 2025, and convicted on Nov. 18, 2025, following a two-day jury trial.
Court documents show that on Oct. 10, 2024, Sago knowingly had ammunition in his possession despite prior felony convictions that legally barred him from having either ammunition or a firearm. Because of his prior record — which includes two convictions for domestic assault and one conviction for domestic assault by strangulation — Sago qualified as an armed career criminal. That designation carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison. He also had prior felony convictions for fleeing police in a motor vehicle, making threats of violence with reckless disregard for others and vehicle theft.
