New documentary explores the lasting legacy of Jacob Wetterling

MINNEAPOLIS — Nearly four decades after the abduction that changed Minnesota forever, a new documentary is offering a closer look at the lives of Patty and Jerry Wetterling and their tireless search for their son, Jacob.

“Echoes in the Night: The Search for Jacob Wetterling” premiered Saturday at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival. The film arrives almost 37 years after 11-year-old Jacob was kidnapped in Stearns County in 1989, and nearly 10 years after his case was finally resolved.

The documentary provides a unique perspective on the tragedy, as filming actually began before the case was solved. Director Chris Newberry was already embedded with the Wetterling family when Jacob’s killer finally confessed and led authorities to his remains in 2016, ending a 27-year mystery…
