Hopkins restaurant Thirty Bales ends 30-year run

Downtown Hopkins mainstay Thirty Bales closed Saturday, ending a 30-year run on Mainstreet.

Todd DuPont and Tom Hutsell opened the Mainstreet restaurant, then called Big 10, in 1996. The business was among the first to arrive downtown in an era of major redevelopment.

The restaurant underwent a revamp and reopened as Thirty Bales in 2018, offering a large menu focused on Midwestern cuisine such as walleye sandwiches and burgers.

“We look forward to what the future brings, but we close this chapter with full hearts and immense pride in the rich history we’ve shared with Hopkins and our surrounding cities,” Todd DuPont and Tom Hutsell shared in a letter announcing the closure. “Thank you for thirty wonderful years.”…
