A rare Queen Anne-style home that’s fallen into disrepair in Northeast Minneapolis could be restored, thanks to the efforts of community members who’ve pressured a developer to relinquish control of the property.
The owners of Recovery Bike Shop, who’ve led the effort to save the home from being razed for redevelopment, recently announced they’ve reached a deal to buy the John Cook House from Master Properties.
Built by mason John L. Cook in 1889, the historic home has long sat vacant at the corner of Tyler Street Northeast and 18th Avenue Northeast. Advocates say years of open windows and vandalism caused tremendous damage to the structure, which the city of Minneapolis designated a historic landmark in 2021.
