James L. Dawson II writes about the 100th birthday celebration of Dr. John M. Warren Sr., a WWII Navy veteran and one of the first African American podiatrists in Minnesota, who was honored by fifty family members and friends at Woodlake in New Hope on May 2, 2026, exactly 100 years to the day of his birth.
On May 2, 2026 — 100 years to the day that Dr. John M. Warren Sr. was born in St. Louis, MO, fifty family and friends gathered in New Hope, Minnesota to celebrate with love the adventures and cherished times shared through the years.
Dr. Warren was first married to Lillian Warren. He and his current wife, Gladys, have made their home in New Hope, MN for the past 50 years. John served in the United States Navy as a WWII veteran, earning the rank of Motor Machinist’s Mate Third Class (SV6, USNR) out of St. Louis, MO, and was honorably discharged on May 7, 1946. Dr. Warren is recognized as one of the first African American podiatrists in the State of Minnesota.
All gathered at Woodlake in New Hope, an assisted living facility, with guests traveling from as far as Washington, D.C. to attend. There was a wonderful display of memorabilia and hall decorations honoring the “100 Years” being celebrated. Highlights included the presence of the family pastor, heartfelt presentations, a group photo, a full spread of food, and a beautiful and delicious birthday cake.
The celebration was blessed by the presence of Pastor Yaffet Gabayehu of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, who delivered God’s Word and a blessing over the 100-year journey of John Warren, a journey that continues…
