Poarch Creek Indians weigh in on large solar projects near tribal lands in Alabama

Alabama’s only federally recognized tribe has weighed in publicly for the first time on the industrial-scale solar development happening near its tribal and historic lands in south Alabama.

In a press release this week, the Poarch Creek Indians Tribal Council said it was gathering information on three industrial-scale solar projects in north Baldwin and Escambia counties: the Silicon Ranch solar facility in Stockton, a planned solar farm in the Tensaw region of Baldwin County, and a potential solar project in Escambia County, adjacent to the tribe’s current property.

“The tribe’s approach is focused on responsible engagement, ensuring that areas of cultural importance in our south Alabama communities are respected,” the council’s release said, “while also allowing time to gather accurate information before taking any public position.”…
