MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — The animal rescue community lost one of its biggest advocates. Janine Woods, the former Executive Director of the Mobile SPCA, has passed away.

Woods died last week after a prolonged illness at the age of 72. Woods was a regular contributor to WKRG’s Pet of the Week segment, which airs in our 9 a.m. and noon newscasts every Monday.
WKRG talked to the Mobile SPCA’s Robin Strickland. Strickland said Woods led the Mobile SPCA for over 40 years. She said Woods didn’t just want to rescue a few dogs. She wanted to help as many as possible.
Strickland said Woods grew the SPCA’s transport program through the years. The organization partners with other shelters and the ASPCA to fly dogs to shelters in northern states. To date, they have flown thousands of dogs to their forever homes.
“There really aren’t enough words to describe how much impact she had on all of us here at the SPCA. Janine spent almost 40 years of her life dedicating it to finding animals a home, and making sure they didn’t die on the streets, didn’t get thrown away in a ditch, that they had somewhere to come be safe and hopefully find their next step in life and find a forever home,” Strickland said. “She always knew what needed to be done, how it needed to be done. She was a force to be reckoned with, and she had a dedication and passion for these animals that will be hard to replace and will not be easily found again.”
