SUMMERDALE, Ala. (WKRG) — It’s not every day a sheriff’s escort is reserved for an alligator, but at Alligator Alley in Summerdale, Colonel, an almost 15-foot-long gator, was a legend.

“This is the Colonel,” Wes Moore with Alligator Alley said. “This was the largest alligator at Alligator Alley. He was here for 20 years.”
Colonel was more than 50 years old when he died of old age, weighing about 12,000 pounds.
“You will never see an American alligator any bigger,” Moore said. “We call him the colonel because, I mean, he was large and in charge.”…
