HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – City officials say Mobile was the victim of a $15 million fraud scheme after a check meant to fund construction of a new arena was instead sent to a criminal enterprise.
The fraudulent wire transfer occurred earlier this month, though the mayor said he did not learn about it until last week. The city has hired a law firm and a forensic accounting firm to conduct an internal review. The FBI is investigating.
