FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WKRG) — Fairhope Police are reminding residents of city laws after a fox squirrel was shot and killed over the weekend.

According to a Fairhope Police Department Facebook post, an injured fox squirrel was found in the Quail Creek neighborhood and was taken to a veterinarian, where it later died.

X-rays showed pellets lodged in the squirrel’s back, confirming it had been shot multiple times in the spine.

“This is a good opportunity to share a few important reminders about local and state laws,” the post said.

  • Discharging firearms of any kind — even pellet guns — within the city limits of Fairhope is prohibited, except for limited situations such as self-defense.
  • State law prohibits the discharge of a firearm within 300 feet of a residence.
  • It is currently not squirrel hunting season.

The police department said the post serves as a “reminder of applicable laws regarding the use of firearms within city limits.”…
