Prosecution, defense clash over state’s effort to postpone Mobile murder trial

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A man accused of killing a disabled veteran in a mistaken-identity revenge killing is scheduled to go on trial for murder Monday – if a judge blocks a prosecution request to postpone it.

The Mobile County District Attorney’s Office is seeking the delay, citing the unavailability of key witnesses against defendant DeAngelo Demetrius Merrill.

“The State stands ready to try this case on May 18, 2026, June 2, 2026, or even May 26, 2026, and if this Court continues trial to any of those dates, the State will immediately contact all State witnesses to confirm availability,” prosecutors wrote in a filing…
