Detours underway along Baldwin Beach Express for southbound traffic

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — Travelers in Baldwin County will have a harder time getting to the beach this week. Southbound traffic on the Beach Express is being forced to detour for the next phase of the Intracoastal Waterway Bridge.

With dozens of orange barrels in place and a state trooper at the ready, this is about as far south as you can go on the Baldwin Beach Express–near the site of the new Gulf Shores High School. The detours started Sunday morning, and while a few drivers were caught off guard, most were ready for it.

“You know, we were aware that it was going to, this was going to happen, but I didn’t know was going to happen so soon. But hopefully everything’s going to come back normal quickly,” said Dwayne Henry who lives nearby. This project is weather-dependent, so if everything goes right, they should be done by Wednesday.

ALDOT says this closure is needed as they near the end of construction for the new Intracoastal Waterway Bridge. It’s hoped this will will ease traffic congestion, especially during the busy summer travel months…
