Gulf Coast drought sees major improvement after heavy May rainfall

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – After four months of severe drought conditions, the Gulf Coast is finally catching a break. Multiple rain events early this month brought substantial rainfall across the region. With the most recent rain event, some areas received nearly 5 inches of precipitation and significantly improved the drought outlook.

The heaviest rain fell Monday night through early Tuesday morning, with the most significant totals concentrated along Interstate 10 and Highway 98. Areas south of Big Creek Lake in Mobile County received nearly 5 inches, while spots near Interstate 65 and I-10 in Mobile saw about 2 inches. Much of the coastal region recorded between 1.5 to 2 inches, though inland areas north of Clarke County received minimal rainfall.
