Eight Mile man charged with murder in Happy Hill homicide

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Police have made an arrest in a fatal shooting in the city’s Happy Hill community last week, and court records suggest the incident involved a love triangle.

Mobile police said Thursday that 28-year-old Joseph J. Smith IV, of Eight Mile, got into a shootout with 23-year-old Jonathan Sanders on Friday in the 700 block of Highland Avenue. Investigators said Smith fired first and that Sanders returned fire. Sanders died, and Smith was taken to the hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot to the leg. The hospital released him Wednesday, and police brought him in for questioning.

Smith is charged with murder and shooting into a building and vehicle.
