Man arrested after Manteca police standoff involving firearm, possible narcotics

MANTECA, Calif. — Manteca police safely took a man into custody Tuesday after a four-hour standoff involving a firearm and possible narcotics use at a home on Wawona Street, authorities said.

Officers responded to the 1300 block of Wawona Street after a woman reported her estranged husband, identified as 56-year-old Johnnie Lloyd Sparks, was under the influence of narcotics and had a firearm while hiding under a pickup truck in her driveway. Sparks is a convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing firearms, according to the Manteca Police Department.

Police said officers found Sparks under the truck with a firearm and attempted to communicate with him, but he was not cooperative. The woman and her teenage son were safely removed from the home as the Manteca SWAT Team, Negotiation Team and San Joaquin County Mobile Crisis Team responded…
