Stanislaus County approves 71 layoffs after $17 million budget mistake

  • Stanislaus County leaders approved 71 layoffs in the 2027 budget, with 67 positions set to be eliminated at the Community Services Agency, including at least 39 social workers.

Stanislaus County leaders are searching for ways to avoid or reduce 71 layoffs approved as part of the county’s 2027 budget Tuesday night.

The layoffs could hit employees at the Community Services Agency the hardest. 67 positions are set to be eliminated there, and only two of those positions are currently vacant, meaning at least 65 people could soon be out of a job in that department alone.
