Walmart’s sprawling new fulfillment center in South Stockton is designed to accommodate more than 1,000 associates upon completion, according to city officials who say the facility is poised to become a major economic engine for the region. The 1.25-million-square-foot operation on Mariposa Avenue is expected to draw additional light-industrial businesses to the area while generating fresh sales tax revenue for the city.
The update came during a City Manager’s Report segment posted by the City of Stockton, in which Economic Development Director Ricardo Noguera detailed the facility’s hiring numbers and its role in the city’s broader growth strategy. Noguera announced that Walmart will hold its grand opening for the new facility on October 8, 2026, capping months of hiring and construction on the south side of town. The city says the site sits near the port, airport, rail lines, and Highways 5 and 99, giving it direct access to some of Northern California’s busiest freight corridors.
That positioning lines up with details Walmart provided when it announced the project, describing the Mariposa Road facility as its fifth “next-generation” automated fulfillment center in the country, according to Business Wire. The facility uses a high-density storage and retrieval system built by technology partner KNAPP that condenses what was once a 12-step manual order fulfillment process down to five steps, part of a design meant to double storage and daily order capacity across the West Coast. The facility is about 50 miles south of Sacramento, the station’s report notes.
A Point-of-Sale Designation With Tax Implications
City officials have emphasized that the Stockton facility will operate as a point-of-sale location, a structure that matters beyond semantics. Because of that designation, the facility has been discussed in connection with potential local sales tax revenue, according to reporting from Stocktonia.
