University of the Pacific professor wins Grammy Award as part of vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth

A University of the Pacific professor has won his second Grammy Award.

Eric Dudley, an associate professor of voice at Pacific’s Conservatory of Music, is a co-founding member of Roomful of Teeth. The ensemble won Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance for the 2023 album “Rough Magic” at the 66th Grammy Awards ceremony Sunday in Los Angeles.

According to the group’s website , Roomful of Teeth is a vocal ensemble “dedicated to reimagining the expressive potential of the human voice.” Their music features a wide range of styles, pitches and vocal techniques.

It’s not the first time Dudley achieved recognition at the music industry’s largest awards show. In 2014, the Pacific professor was a member of the group when it won a Grammy Award in the same category. Roomful of Teeth was selected to perform on stage during the pre-telecast ceremony that year.

Dudley said he watched Sunday’s ceremony with his wife Melanie and his son Ethan at their East Bay home.

“It’s natural to have a lot of pride when you can compete against some of the great musicians in the world, which has been the case in this category. It’s traditionally full of musical heavy hitters,” he said. “This was the first big project we have done since the pandemic, and it was an effort that meant a lot to the whole group.”
