San Joaquin County Sheriff calls for state leaders to reexamine compassionate release law

(FOX40.COM) – The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office is calling on state leaders to reexamine California’s compassionate release laws after the arrest of a man once convicted of attempting to kill police officers.

According to the sheriff’s office, 57-year-old Steven Rodriguez was arrested during a traffic stop on May 7 in San Joaquin County. Deputies say Rodriguez was driving without a license and was allegedly in possession of weapons despite being a convicted felon.

Rodriguez was previously sentenced to 20 years behind bars in connection with a 2017 ambush-style shooting targeting officers with the Stockton Police Department. However, he was released in November 2025 through California’s compassionate release process after medical evaluations determined he had a terminal condition and only months left to live…
