Federal court officials in Montgomery are warning of a jury duty scam seeking to bilk people out of thousands of dollars.
The United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama has received reports from several people describing calls from bad actors posing as law enforcement, said Trey Granger, clerk of the court. People are being told that they have missed jury or grand jury duty and are told to pay significant fines in order to avoid arrest, a release stated. Court officials are urging people to be cautious of “arrest warrants” being produced listing case numbers, bond amounts and an officer’s name.
“Just this week, an individual paid $4,000 to a bad actor in a jury scam,” said Amelia Geathers, chief deputy clerk. “The victim was later asked for another $10,000.”…
