Two rounds of strong/severe storms Monday

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Good Monday morning. Today is a 48 First Alert Weather Day for two rounds of heavy rain and strong to severe thunderstorms.

We start off the day overcast and humid with morning temperatures in the lower 70s. The first round of rain and storms today will move in as early as 6AM and continue to track east through the morning hours. The morning round of rain and storms will likely not be severe in nature, but some stronger storms are still expected with locally heavy rainfall and frequent lightning. Skies remain cloudy through the day with a breezy wind from the southwest gusting between 15 to 25 miles per hour.

The second round of thunderstorms will develop ahead of an approaching cold front and move into Northwest Alabama as early as noon. The second round this afternoon will have greater potential of producing severe thunderstorms. The greatest concern today will be damaging straight line wind gusts over 50 miles per hour, these gusts can easily knock down trees and lead to possible power outages. Along with the wind threat, frequent lightning, locally heavy rainfall and small hail can also be expected. There is a very low threat for a brief, spin-up tornado later today. Please stay weather aware this afternoon and have multiple ways to receive warnings. The second round of storms will track east through the afternoon and evening and the severe weather threat will end around 10 PM at the latest for Northeast Alabama…
