Alabama has one of the highest incarceration rates in the nation and recent research showed people released from prison face increased health issues and shorter life spans.
A 2026 study from the American Public Health Association found formerly incarcerated older adults have a life expectancy nearly six years shorter than their peers. For men between 50 and 75, the difference is nearly eight years.
