$10 Million Gift to UAB Aims to Improve Rural Health Care Across Alabama

A $10 million gift to the University of Alabama at Birmingham will help train more primary care physicians in rural communities and encourage them to stay and practice in underserved areas across the state.

The donation from Mike and Gillian Goodrich will establish Goodrich Rural Innovation in Training for Alabama (GRIT), a new initiative designed to expand rural medical training, support future physicians and strengthen health care access in rural Alabama.

The program will fund scholarships for medical trainees, provide support for new rural residency programs and invest in rural clinics where physicians will train.
