MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WBMA) — The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries (ADAI) is encouraging consumers to continue following safe food handling practices as federal and state public health officials investigate a multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by the parasite *Cyclospora cayetanensis*.
According to ADAI, no cases have been reported in Alabama at this time. However, officials are reminding residents that proper food safety practices, particularly when handling fresh produce, remain an important part of reducing the risk of foodborne illness.
“Food safety is our top priority, and safeguarding Alabama’s food supply is a responsibility we take seriously,” Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Rick Pate said in a statement. “One of the best ways consumers can protect themselves is by purchasing fresh, Alabama-grown produce from trusted local farmers.”…
