MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – They were just kids when they took a stand for equality.
Four of the plaintiffs in the case that helped desegregate Alabama schools (Lee v. Macon County Board of Education) told stories about the loved ones that inspired them to fight and the struggles they endured in the process at Montgomery’s federal courthouse on Friday.
For plaintiffs that have since passed away or couldn’t make it, family attended in their honor.
“The state troopers came onto the bus, and they had these papers that they handed out to us and said we could not go in the school,” remembered plaintiff Wilma Jones Scott. “I stood up on the bus, took the paper that this officer gave me and tore it up. I thought my sister might faint in the back.”…
