UNICOI COUNTY, Tenn., (WJHL) – Legislation requiring Tennessee drivers to show proof of insurance when registering a vehicle passed in the recently concluded Tennessee General Assembly.
HB1690 feeds off the Tennessee Financial Responsibility Law, originally passed in 1977, holding drivers financially responsible for motor vehicle accidents.
“Sometimes, whenever you pass a law, it takes a few years to get it to where it needs to be,” said bill sponsor Tim Hicks (R-Gray). “And I think this is just a pretty big upgrade on a law that has sort of gone. I think during COVID, things got worse with people not wanting to carry insurance. And I think it is a decision. I think that most people can afford to carry insurance. It’s just that it’s easier, it’s been easier in the State of Tennessee not to.”
