Dangerous heat to grip Mid-South with heat index up to 111 degrees

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A prolonged stretch of dangerous heat is expected to blanket the Mid-South this week, with “feels like” temperatures climbing as high as 111 degrees by midweek.

WREG Meteorologist Max Claypool said the region is in for several days of oppressive heat, with temperatures remaining well above average through the end of the week.

High temperatures Monday and Tuesday are expected to reach the upper 90s, with heat index values around 107 degrees.

The heat is expected to intensify Wednesday and Thursday, when afternoon highs could approach 100 degrees and heat index values may exceed 110 degrees.

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory through 6 a.m. Wednesday for portions of West Tennessee, North Mississippi, East Arkansas and southeast Missouri. An Extreme Heat Watch is also in effect from Wednesday morning through Thursday evening, when heat index values as high as 111 degrees are possible.

The National Weather Service warns that the prolonged combination of high temperatures and humidity will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.

How to adjust your A/C temperature to help save money

Claypool urges everyone to take precautions during the extended heatwave by:

  • Drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated.
  • Spending time in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
  • Limiting outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
  • Avoiding strenuous activity in the afternoon heat.
  • Checking on elderly relatives, neighbors and anyone without adequate cooling.

The good news is that the heat may ease slightly by next weekend, with highs returning to the mid-90s. Temperatures are expected to moderate a bit more heading into next week, though conditions will remain hot…
