Tennessee’s new transfer rule changes high school sports landscape, challenges coaches

The landscape of Tennessee high school athletics is changing following the implementation of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association’s new one-time transfer rule, giving student-athletes greater flexibility to change schools while remaining immediately eligible to compete.

The rule, which took effect July 1 after being signed into law by Gov. Bill Lee and adopted by the TSSAA Legislative Council, allows middle and high school athletes one transfer without a bona fide change of address during each stage of their education.

Under the new policy, students are allowed one “free” transfer during grades 6-8 and another during grades 9-12, provided the move occurs during summer break. Student-athletes must still meet all other TSSAA eligibility requirements, including academic standards, age limits and rules regarding recruiting and coaching relationships…
