MTSU Aerospace Campus Taking Shape in Shelbyville as Murfreesboro Airport Eyes New Opportunities

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WGNS News) – For decades, Middle Tennessee State University’s Aerospace Department has been the dominant tenant at the Murfreesboro Municipal Airport, accounting for a substantial share of the aircraft, hangar space and daily operations at the airfield. That longstanding relationship is preparing for a major change as construction continues on MTSU’s new Aerospace campus at the Shelbyville Municipal Airport in Bedford County.

The transition is becoming increasingly visible along U.S. Highway 231 South in Shelbyville, where the massive steel-framed structures of the future Aerospace complex are taking shape. Motorists passing the municipal airport can now see the scale of the project as construction crews continue building what will eventually become the primary home for much of MTSU’s flight-training operation.

MTSU and the City of Shelbyville marked a major construction milestone on July 21 with a “topping-out” ceremony, during which a ceremonial final beam was placed at the highest point of the 52,000-square-foot flight training facility.
