Rutherford Assessor Rob Mitchell quits assessors group, questions its legal standing

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WZTV) — Rutherford County Assessor Rob Mitchell says he is quitting the Tennessee Association of Assessing Officers, alleging the group has been collecting thousands of dollars in taxpayer money despite lacking legal standing as a corporation in Tennessee.

The Tennessee Association of Assessing Officers’ website states, “The Tennessee Assessor’s purpose is to work on behalf of the people of our great State to ensure fairness and uniformity in statutes regarding the assessment of property.”

Mitchell, however, said the organization was dissolved in 1983. He also said the group does not appear in IRS records, and that the Tennessee Secretary of State’s office confirmed there is no other name by which the organization is registered…
