Major improvements coming to Garden City area starting in September, officials say

GARDEN CITY, S.C. (WBTW) — Major improvements are coming to the Garden City area, including a dedicated food truck staging area, additional paved parking, and improved drainage systems, Horry County Government said Thursday.

After receiving a notice to proceed in April, Horry County Engineering will begin construction in September after years of planning for a reimagined and more resilient Garden City.

Officials said the five-phase Garden City Streetscape project has an anticipated complete date in 2029.

The project plans to provide several upgrades to the area, including:

  • Moving overhead utility lines underground
  • Improving drainage systems
  • Building new sidewalks
  • Reducing the impacts of high tides and flooding
  • Improving water quality
  • Roadside landscaping
  • Brighter street lighting
  • New pedestrian crosswalks at all major intersections
  • New asphalt along Waccamaw Drive

Phase one of the work will begin along Waccamaw Drive, extending from the Georgetown County line to Magnolia Avenue and along Atlantic Avenue extending from Waccamaw Drive to the marsh.

  • A dedicated food truck staging area
  • Additional paved parking

According to Horry County Government, once work along the southern corridor of Waccamaw Drive is finished, work will shift to phase two, which extends from Magnolia Avenue to Cypress Avenue.
