Conway Fire Department pushes Engine 52 into service

CONWAY, S.C. — The Conway Fire Department officially placed its newest fire engine into service Friday during a traditional push-in ceremony at Station 2, continuing a fire service tradition from a bygone era.

Firefighters, city officials, Conway City Council members and community members gathered at Station 2, 704 Country Club Drive, to ceremonially push Engine 52 into the apparatus bay before it officially entered service.

The tradition dates to a time when firefighters had to physically push horse-drawn fire apparatus back into the station after returning from emergency calls because the equipment could not be backed into the bay under its own power.
