CONWAY, S.C. (WPDE) — Conway City Council unanimously approved a construction contract for the Kingston Boardwalk Trail and Docks, moving forward on a long-planned effort to create a safer way for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the Waccamaw River.
Council awarded the contract to H, K, & W Marine Construction for the Kingston Boardwalk Trail and Ferry Project. The project is identified as a priority in the Riverfront and Downtown Master Plan for Conway (2017) and the Conway Pathways and Trails Plan (2022).
City planning documents show that residents have repeatedly ranked a river crossing among their highest priorities in public meetings, engagement sessions, and online surveys.
The Kingston Boardwalk Trail and Ferry Project is expected to offer a safe, scenic and accessible connection across the Waccamaw River. Currently, the only river crossing is the historic Waccamaw River Memorial Bridge (US 501 Business).
City officials said the project will eventually offer a pedestrian or bicycle connection from downtown Conway to the Waccamaw River Park along Depot Road, and the long-term outlook is to add a bike lane to Depot Road to support a connection to the Coastal Carolina University Campus…
