Surfside Beach did make verification attempt before sending $545,000 payment, report shows

SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A new report released by the town of Surfside Beach shows it did make an attempt to verify before sending $545,000 to a fraudulent bank account.

The investigation was overseen by Constangy, Brooks, Smith and Prophete, a law firm hired by the town, which coordinated with an independent digital forensics team approved by the town’s insurance company. The investigation focused on whether any Surfside Beach internal systems or Microsoft 365 accounts were compromised.
