Grand Strand mother honors children by turning grief into a mission of kindness

HORRY COUNTY S.C. (WPDE) — Each month, ABC15 recognizes someone making a difference in our community with the Carolina Champion Award. This month’s honoree is a Grand Strand mother who transformed unimaginable loss into a legacy of hope for children and families.

When Maria Pellicane’s two children were diagnosed with Cockayne syndrome, a rare genetic disorder, doctors told her they likely had only four to seven years to live.

I was in my car,” Pellicane recalled. “She called and was hysterical, saying the test came back and you’re right, this is what they have, and I can’t help you. There is no cure.”
