FIRST ALERT – Air Quality Alert issued for Horry County as wildfire smoke lingers

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services has issued an AIR QUALIT ALERT for Horry County, including Myrtle Beach, Conway and surrounding communities, through midnight Wednesday.

The alert comes as smoke from a nearly 2000 acre wildfire in Marion County continues to blanket the Conway area and surrounding regions. High pressure over the Southeast will keep smoke close to the ground through midday Wednesday, with stagnant conditions and light wind expected to enhance smoke, particularly during overnight and morning hours.

“Stable conditions and little wind will enhance the noticeability of smoke, especially in the overnight and morning hours,” the alert states.

The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services recommends that individuals with respiratory health issues limit outdoor time and move activities indoors when possible. Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed and run air conditioning units with fresh air intakes closed and filters clean to prevent smoke and fine particulates from entering homes.
