U.S. Drought Monitor labels conditions severe to extreme across Grand Strand, Pee Dee

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Drought conditions across the Grand Strand and Pee Dee are continuing to worsen, according to weekly statistics released by the U.S. Drought Monitor.

“Across the Carolinas, severe drought spread across much of eastern South Carolina, with extreme drought expanding in the far southeast,” a map released on Thursday showed. “Extreme drought also expanded along the North Carolina–South Carolina border and in western and northeastern North Carolina.”

The Drought Monitor lists conditions using six categories ranging from none to exceptional, with the current map showing at least a severe drought across more than 93% of South Carolina and extreme conditions across roughly 33% of the state. Those numbers are significantly higher than a week earlier, when 68% was listed as severe and 22% as extreme.

Conditions across a majority of Grand Strand and Pee Dee counties are listed as severe in the latest report, with conditions considered extreme in northern Marlboro County and a section of neighboring Scotland County, North Carolina…
