Inaugural Venus Flytrap Fest plants its roots in Horry County

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — The inaugural Flytrap Fest is set to celebrate endemic Venus flytraps, which are only found in Horry County within the state of South Carolina.

According to Friends of Lewis Ocean Bay, wild Venus flytraps represent local unique wild places, including longleaf pine woodlands and Carolina Bays, all of which depend on prescribed fire.

There are three events set across three days for the festival. The first is the Flytrap Social, which will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Bonfire Taqueria in Conway. The community is invited to join conservationists, naturalists, and Venus flytrap fans to celebrate the start of the festival.

The second event takes place from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday off Environmental Parkway in Conway. There, the Flytrap 5K will take place, as well as a conservation fair. There willl be conservation groups and educational displays, including the debut of a mobile flytrap bog.

Registration is required to participate in the 5K, but there are no tickets required for the fair.

The inaugural fest wraps up from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday on International Drive in Conway with the Lewis Ocean Bay Tour. Attendees will be able to go out into the longleaf pine woods with local naturalists to learn more about the plants, animals, and landscape…
