Shady Oaks in south suburban Homer Glen is one of the oldest summer camps of its kind – a special place just for kids and adults with different abilities.
“This is our 79th year of operation,” said Scott Steele, the camp’s executive director. “We provide a recreational opportunity for our campers that they may not be able to receive other places. We do normal camp activities. Right now, our youngest camper is 13. The oldest is in his early 70s, and he has been coming about 65 years.”
In the 1940s, there were little or no services available for people with disabilities. So, a group of dedicated parents of children with cerebral palsy formed what is now Shady Oaks Camp for People with Disabilities. It’s located on 30-plus acres of land…
