Freezing rain making for icy, treacherous morning commute

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO ) – Freezing rain this morning is resulting in icy conditions and a possibly dangerous commute.

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. for most of the area counties- Cook, DuPage, Kane, Will, Kendall, De Kalb and La Salle-. The advisory will be in place until noon for Lake and McHenry Counties.

The NWS warns untreated roads and sidewalks could be completely ice-covered. Anticipate slippery, even hazardous road conditions. The NWS cautions drivers to reduce their speeds and increase following distance.

Periods of rain and freezing rain will continue throughout the day and into the evening, AccuWeather says. Due to the ground remaining frozen, icy conditions could still develop despite temperatures being above freezing.

This wet weather pattern will stick around the Chicago area until the end of the work week, AccuWeather says. Wednesday and Thursday, there will be periods of just plain rain, as temperatures will approach the 40s.
