Residents asked for light, and Fort Myers Beach listened

Since Hurricane Ian reshaped Estero Island, residents and business owners have repeatedly voiced the same concern during public meetings, recovery conversations, and community outreach efforts: Times Square needed better lighting. They wanted safer walkways at night, a more welcoming downtown atmosphere, and public spaces that once again felt vibrant after sunset. Many residents spoke not only about visibility, but about restoring a sense of energy and normalcy to the island’s downtown core. As Fort Myers Beach continues rebuilding, the town has prioritized projects that directly reflect those community concerns, and this latest improvement does exactly that.

From May 7 through May 13, the Town of Fort Myers Beach will install six new solar-powered, turtle-friendly streetlights throughout Times Square, bringing new visibility, resiliency, and ambiance to the island’s historic downtown district.

The town selected lighting systems manufactured by Fonroche Lighting, a French company recognized globally for autonomous solar infrastructure and off-grid public lighting systems. The solar fixtures operate independently from the electrical grid through integrated photovoltaic panels, intelligent battery storage systems, and high-efficiency LED technology. Unlike traditional streetlights that require trenching, underground wiring, and extensive utility connections, these fixtures generate and store their own renewable energy while automatically activating at sunset and adapting performance based on environmental conditions…
