Middle Tennessee connections to the 96th Academy Awards

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – The Oscars are just a few hours away!

2023 was a year that saw no shortage of flicks worthy of prestigious awards and recognition. From the summer’s highly-anticipated release of Oppenheimer and Barbie , to more arthouse-style films like Past Lives and Poor Things , last year felt like a year where there truly was something for everyone on the big screen.

Before you sink into your couch with your bowl of popcorn (because what other snack is more appropriate for an awards show about movies ? ) for the show, here are two Middle Tennessee connections to the 96th Academy Awards.

“Oppenheimer” in 70mm IMAX

Considered by many to be the favorite to win Best Picture, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer hit theaters in July 2023. The three-hour-long biopic of Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer radiantly captures the zeitgeist of the mid-to-late 1940s, a time when much of the world was in turmoil, conflict, and dealing with paranoia.

Oppenheimer ‘s concurrent release with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie became the movie event of the summer and a cultural phenomenon colloquially known as “Barbenheimer” – a term that found its way into the lexicon of moviegoers, encouraging them to see both films as a double-feature.
