NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Captain Kristopher Ensley, Commander of the U.S. Coast Guard ship Eagle, calls the ship a “living laboratory.”
The Eagle is the military’s only actively sailing tall ship. It’s a training ship, where Coast Guard cadets learn to sail, really sail, climbing high in the rigging to unfurl the heavy cloth from the yardarms, and cranking the original wooden spokes of the helm.
They learn to use a sextant and the stars for navigation, instead of GPS…
