Every day in schools across Louisiana, students are tutored by college students who could be located thousands of miles away.
Called Ignite Reading, it’s a virtual tutoring program that matches undergrads with elementary school students who need help in reading. Created during the pandemic by the teacher-recruitment organization Teach For America, the national program is one of many providers of intensive or “high-dosage” tutoring that Louisiana brought in to help students recover from COVID-related learning loss.
This past school year, about 420 Ignite tutors worked with students across Louisiana. This fall, the program is set to expand to several more schools, with nearly 570 tutors expected to support students…
