Letters: Students aren’t fooled by politicians pushing Ten Commandments in school

Not only is mandatory posting of the Ten Commandments in classrooms a bad idea because it gives the imprimatur of the state to a particular religious tradition, but it is also inane. These instructions are not specific enough to be particularly useful.

For instance: “Thou shalt not kill.” Yet, those pushing this are strong capital punishment advocates and war hawks. This is not to mention someone like me, who is a vegetarian and does not believe in slaughtering animals and eating them. Of course, this only goes so far. The Jains refuse to even kill insects. So how many of us can claim to comply with this commandment as it is written?

But the main reason to oppose such a measure is the blatant hypocrisy of its advocates. If these commandments are supposed to be a moral code for living, they’re certainly not followed by those who are trying to push this on the public…
