Blighted Mid-City hospital to be torn down soon after decades empty

NEW ORLEANS — After sitting vacant for nearly two decades, the former Lindy Boggs Medical Center is one step closer to coming down. City leaders say demolition of the long-abandoned hospital site in Mid-City is expected to begin in July, marking a significant milestone in redevelopment efforts that have stalled under multiple administrations since Hurricane Katrina.

“We expect demolition to start in July,” Jeff Schwartz, the city’s director of housing, community development, and special projects, said. “There’s some contracts that need to be executed, but they’ve been approved through all the permitting processes to start the demolition, so it’s imminent.”

The former hospital has stood empty since it was flooded during Hurricane Katrina and ultimately closed. Over the years, several redevelopment proposals have been announced, but none have moved forward. Mayor Helena Moreno said she had hoped demolition would begin within her first 100 days in office…
